A ridge of ice that forms along the lower edge of a roof, possibly leading to roof leaks. Ice dams are usually caused by heat leaking from the attic, which melts snow on the upper parts of the roof; the water then refreezes along the colder eaves, forming a dam that allows water to penetrate under shingles, possibly leaking into the attic. Remember: Ice dams are just the symptom of a problem. The real problem is poor ventilation and insulation. * Keep your gutters clean of all debris
* Buy a roof snow scraper or roof rake and remove the snow regularly from the roof. This will reduce the chance of ice dams forming. Just clean off a few feet along the bottom edge of the roof. This keeps the eave edge free of ice. * Make sure there is adequate insulation in your attic. 508-713-5595 ![]() ![]() |
